What does mean by Free Study in Germany ?

Free Study in Germany” typically refers to the opportunity for international students to pursue higher education in Germany without paying tuition fees, especially at public universities. Here’s a breakdown of what it means:

  1. No Tuition Fees (at most public universities):

    • Germany abolished tuition fees for both domestic and international students in most public universities.

    • Students may still need to pay a semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag), usually between €100–€350 per semester, which covers administration, public transport, student services, etc.

  2. High-Quality Education:

    • German universities are globally recognized for their strong academic standards, especially in fields like engineering, medicine, IT, and business.

  3. Courses in English & German:

    • Many master’s programs are offered in English, while bachelor’s programs are usually in German. Knowing German is a big advantage.

  4. Living Costs Not Covered:

    • While tuition may be free, you still need to cover living expenses, like:

      • Rent

      • Food

      • Health insurance

      • Transportation

      • Estimated cost: €850–€1,200/month

  5. Blocked Account Requirement:

    • For a student visa, you must show proof of sufficient funds. As of now, it’s around €11,904per year, deposited into a blocked account (Sperrkonto).

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR APPLICATION 

1. Academic Certificates

  • 10th and 12th Mark Sheets & Certificates (for Bachelor’s)

  • Bachelor’s Degree Certificate + Transcripts (for Master’s)

  • If not in English or German: Certified Translation may be needed

2. Language Proficiency Certificates

  • For English-taught programs:

    • IELTS (usually min. 6.0–6.5)

    • TOEFL (min. 80–90 iBT)

    • Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter may be accepted in some cases

  • For German-taught programs:

    • TestDaF, DSH, Goethe-Zertifikat (B1–C1 depending on the program)

3. Passport

  • Valid passport (scanned copy of the first and last pages)

4. CV / Resume

  • Updated with academic qualifications, internships, work experience (if any)

5. Letter of Motivation / Statement of Purpose (SOP)

  • A well-written statement explaining why you want to study that course in Germany

6. Letters of Recommendation (LOR)

  • Usually 1–2 academic or professional references (especially for master’s)

7. APS Certificate (for Indian students – mandatory since Nov 2022)

  • Issued by the APS India office – verifies academic documents

8. Passport Size Photographs

  • As per German visa/ID photo standards (biometric)

9. Work Experience Certificate (if applicable)

  • Especially important for master’s applicants applying after a gap or with relevant experience
